Expat Life Coaching

Moving to a new country can be as exciting as it can be daunting. Challenges may come up on many fronts: adapting to a new professional environment, dealing with cultural shock, finding friends or helping your kids or partner adapt to their new life.

It is important to remember that when the initial dust of excitement settles, it is completely normal to experience some side effects of living abroad. Difficulties with fitting in, learning a new language, feeling overwhelmed or lonely, to name but a few, are common among expats. I trust that everyone finds their solutions with time. Coaching helps you speed up the process, approach it intentionally, integrate more smoothly and feel supported throughout your expat journey.

When to start expat coaching?

Some clients approach the move abroad proactively and start with coaching before they move. This can help with getting clearer on your goals and reflecting on what you intend to do differently, and which issues you hope to leave behind. If not dealt with consciously, problems (read patterns) tend to travel with us. While the proactive approach is ideal, most clients realise that they could use some support, to make the most of their expat adventure, only after they have already moved.

A chance for a fresh beginning

Your move may be imposed by the nature of your job, or might be motivated by your desire for a different life. Whether you have been reassigned to a new country, or you made the choice to try something new - this is your chance to do things differently.

Here are the most common goals that expat clients seek to achieve:

- Deal with culture shock and new corporate culture

- Build new business from scratch

- Develop new social and professional networks

- Adapt communication skills to a different professional culture

- Navigate feelings of isolation and loneliness

- Help your family adapt to the new environment

- Help your spouse adapt (group with highest dissatisfaction rates)

- Manage relationship issues while abroad

- Adapt to post-expat life after moving back home

The sessions are designed to help you see the wider picture and assist you to find solutions. Sometimes, identifying and voicing the problem and setting a clear intention to resolve it, shifts things. As a seasoned expat myself, I enjoy helping clients speed up their integration process and boost their expat-living learning curve. My coaching toolbox contains a rich set of options to play with, such as perspective shifting, transforming limiting beliefs, role-play, creative brain-storming and problem-solving. Each of these can help bring a new piece of insight or point you in the right direction to help shift the situation you are in.

Whether you choose coaching, self-help videos or articles, the bottom line is, help is out there and you don't need to settle for enduring challenges endlessly on your own. Approach it proactively, get support if you need it, and make the most of your adventure abroad!
